The Zagnut Bar ranks right up there in the "All Time Weird Candy Bar Names" Hall of Fame. What exactly is a Zagnut? I always wondered as a kid. Could there be a secret meaning to it? Was there once a Zignut Bar? It took a long time, but I finally figured it out. Back in the early days of the D.L. Clark Candy Company in the first two decades of the 20th century, Clark made a candy-coated popcorn treat that came with a prize, similar to Cracker Jack. Its name was Zig Zag. So, in the 1930s when Clark expanded its candy bar line with a crunchy peanut butter bar with toasted coconut, they paid homage to Zig Zag by naming it Zagnut.
Zagnut is still being made today, now by Hershey. Here are a couple of examples of the Zagnut Bar wrapper from 1977 and 1984. I still love the name Zagnut, even if it is a little less mysterious to me now.
